I just started making tallow this year and I am amazed at how many uses there are for it. I rendered the beef fat from our Edgington Farms grass fed Heritage Dexter Cattle here in Xenia, Ohio. Our cattle are raised on pasture with supplemental hay, with no added antibiotics and no added hormones. The fat is wet rendered 3 times for purity. Tallow is wonderful for use in many DIY skin care products, seasoning cast iron pans and griddles, and in soap and candle making. I keep several tallow candles around for when the power goes out.
Our beef tallow is perfect for making skin care products. Beef tallow is rich in fatty acids which act as emollients, providing nourishment and hydration to the skin. It also contains Vitamins A, D, E, and K which can protect the skin from free radical damage. Tallow from grass fed cattle contains more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) than tallow from grain fed animals. CLA is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that support overall skin health.
Used in soap making, tallow creates hard, long-lasting bars with a creamy lather.
We have the following sizes of pure grass fed tallow for sale:
Pint/$15
Pint candle/$15
1/2 pint candle/$10
1lb bulk (is currently in ~3lb pans @ $25 each) and can be cut into 1lb blocks @ $10/lb
The pints and half pints are in glass canning jars.
An article by the Mayo Clinic titled "What is beef tallow? Is it good for me?" was an interesting read.
